Frances Dertz, age 78, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, in Chicago. Fran was dedicated to her family, especially her husband, Nick; she was devoted to Jesus, encouraging others in their faith, and welcoming and friendly to anyone who met her.
Fran was born December 4, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, to Reynold & Margaret Adducci. Her one sister, Donna, became her best friend. Fran grew up in the Roseland neighborhood and graduated from Fenger High School. In 1968, she married Nicholaus Dertz on July 27. They moved to Oak Forest shortly after where they raised their family.
Fran was a homemaker and volunteered at the school for many years until all four children were in school full-time. She rejoined the workforce in the 1980s at a bank downtown and as a switchboard operator at Sears. In the 1990s, Fran became everyone's favorite cashier at Jewel, where she stayed until she retired from local 881 UFCW after many years of service. Since retiring, Fran has spent time with her husband, assisted with after-school care for her grandkids, volunteered at church, and hosted weekly ladies' Bible studies. Fran was an avid reader, a talented artist, a history and trivia buff, and a fantastic cook. She loved talking to people, visiting new restaurants to try different foods, and she thoroughly enjoyed attending her grandchildren's activities and performances.
Frannie is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, Nicholaus Dertz. She was preceded in death by her parents, Reynold and Margaret Adducci (nee McCafferty), and her cherished sister, Donna (John) Menzyk. Loving mother of Daniel (Serena) Dertz, Caroline (Michael) Horvath, Catherine (Patrick) Sweetman, and Alexander (Teresa) Dertz. Adored grandmother of Zach (Justice), Sean (Nature), Sophia, Breanna, Maddie, Joey, Alli, Nicky and six great-grandchildren. Treasured Auntie to many nieces and nephews, along with their children and grandchildren. Fran also leaves behind many whom she considered family, reflecting her welcoming and kind nature.
