Frederick Paul "Fred" Hames, 91, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025, in Palos Heights, Illinois. Born on July 18, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, Fred lived a life marked by dedication to family, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to the people around him.
Fred proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955, spending 17 months in Korea working in Army Intelligence. His time in the military instilled in him a deep sense of patriotism and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life.
After returning home, Fred joined the family business. He began in sales at Hames Oldsmobile transitioning to managing the back office. In 1990, he accepted the invitation to work for the other family business, Buedel Food Products. His proudest professional achievement was as the owner of Frederick P. Hames Accounting and Tax Service. He built a thriving practice where he was frequently awarded the title of "Employee of the Month" by his four-legged, furry apprentice and granddog, Sailor, who’s decision may have been influenced by the numerous dog treats Fred gave him.
Beyond his professional life, Fred was a man who valued connection above all else. He was known for his generosity and ability to make everyone feel like family. Whether through his work or personal relationships, he fostered meaningful bonds that lasted a lifetime.
Fred was a 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus and served as Treasurer for years in one of the oldest councils in the Chicago area. In recent years he was a member of St. Theodore Guerin Council 14057. He also loved the volunteer work he did with Chicago Baseball Cancer Charities. He looked forward to their annual golf tournament and played in it for many years. He also enjoyed attending the annual Shriners’ benefit game at Comiskey Park.
Fred had a passion for sports – playing and viewing. In his younger and middle years, he enjoyed bowling with his teammates, and golf remained a lifelong love. He found joy on the fairways and greens, sharing laughter and friendly competition with those around him. Fred also enjoyed watching Green Bay Packers football and White Sox baseball on tv - when he wasn't watching Hallmark movies. (Yes, you read that right!).
Fred is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Marianna (Matyniak), their daughter Lauren, sons Jeff and Steve, sister-in-law Carol (Matyniak) Holland, as well as several nieces and nephews along with their children and grandchildren. He also leaves behind many whom he considered family—an enduring reflection of the warmth and kindness he extended to all.
He is preceded in death by his parents Paul Leo and Catherine (Buedel) Hames; his brothers George (Catherine), Anthony "Bud" (Eleanor "Babe"), Robert "Bob" (Vera), and Leon “Lee” (Darlene); brother-in-law Thomas “Tom” Matyniak; as well as three nieces and a nephew.
