John Michael Fenlon, known affectionately as Jack to family and friends, passed away on May 22, 2024, in Palos Park, IL. He was age 85. After graduating from Saint Rita HS in 1957, Jack became a Tin Can Sailor for the U.S. Navy, serving as a radar man and helmsman aboard the destroyer, USS John Paul Jones.
After his time in the Navy, Jack began his 37-year career as a pressman for R.R. Donnelly and Sons. Journalists say that they write the first draft of history. Jack’s job was to make sure that draft made it to people’s hands in the form of Time, Life, and other magazines. Not only did he print the news; he also read it. That knowledge, along with his sharp problem-solving abilities, made him skilled with Chicago Tribune crossword puzzles that frustrated the rest of us.
An avid golfer and master storyteller, Jack was most passionate about his family. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elaine Fenlon (nee Harrington). He is the cherished father of Dr. Mark (Christine) Fenlon and Dr. Julie (Rodney) Delfinado; beloved grandfather of Connor, Jack, Reilly, and Glenn; loving brother of Nancy LeMire (the late William); and fond uncle and friend to many, including his childhood friends in the Us Guys Club.
He is the son of the late John J. Fenlon and Edna O’Reilly. He is preceded in death by two siblings: Sister Therese Fenlon (IBVM) and Laurence (the late Diane) Fenlon.
