Mary "Mae" Hughes Kelly
Intrepid explorer of life and love. Confident and strong to the very end. Proud, independent thinker before the advent of woman’s liberation. Athletic and competitive. A tom boy in her youth. Wicked left-handed tennis player—beat all the boys in the neighborhood. League golf champion at the age of 85. Innovator, inventor and marketer (“Picture That” frame-hanging system, hairspray goggles, Kay-Mae Products, and Kelly Interiors). Executive secretary for the president of Ethel Oil. Assistant to the Rich East High School Athletic Director. Advocate, friend and confidant to her peers. Loved music, and a great singer!
But her most cherished roles, and the ones that brought her the most joy in life, were:
Beloved wife of the late Malcolm F. Kelly
Inspired, devoted, and spontaneously fun mother of Michael, Malcolm (Boots), Mary Eileen, Johnny and Maureen
Mother in-law to Donna, Mary Ann, Terry (deceased) and Stuart
Proud grandmother of Sean (Rachel), Brendan (Emilia), Danny, Maureen, Beth, Matthew, Liam and Ellie
Great grandmother of Tessa and Julia
Dear sister of Eileen Dwyer Otto and the late Nicholas Hughes
Fun and entertaining aunt to Jimmy, Nancy, Ginger, Lynn, Billy and Sally
She shaped us, enriched us, guided and consoled us. She made us laugh and taught us to live life more richly. Her spirit lives on in us all.
