Naji "Nick" Zegar

Nick Zegar, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, passed away on April 15, 2025. He was the loving and devoted husband and soulmate of Diane (Thanasouras) Zegar, proud father of Michael and Marcus Donnelly, and adoring Papa to Amelia and Dax Donnelly—his true pride and joy. Nick had an unmistakable soft spot for his grandchildren, who lit up his world and brought him endless happiness.

Nick was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Sabri and Sumaya Zegar, and his dear brothers, Gamal and Najeeb. He carried their memory with him always. He is survived by his brother, Amer, with whom he shared a lifelong bond.

Nick was known and loved by everyone who had the privilege of crossing paths with him. He was as real as they come. Nick had a way of stirring just enough to get people talking and laughing wherever he went. Beneath his tough exterior was a heart full of love and unmatched devotion to his family.

For 37 years, Nick proudly worked for the Belt Railway, where he demonstrated an incredible work ethic and was highly respected among his peers. Outside of work, Nick loved religiously going to the gym and supporting his Chicago sports—most notably the Cubs and the Jordan-era Bulls.

Nick found joy in the little pleasures of life. Whether it was his love for family, his perfectly manicured yard, or a competitive game of bags, Nick lived every moment with passion and purpose. He lived life to the fullest, and his memory will live on—in every laugh, every Nick-ism, every Elvis song, and every chant of “Go Cubs Go.”

He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and most definitely never forgotten.
